Alexis Mac Allister has reacted after missing a penalty in Liverpool’s Community Shield shootout defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Reds took the lead twice through new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, but were each time pegged back by equalisers from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr.

In the subsequent penalty shootout, Mohamed Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott all missed their spot-kicks in a tense and low-quality shootout, handing Palace a 3-2 victory.

Arne Slot acknowledged after the game that Liverpool need to improve after their penalty shootout loss to Palace.

“The main issue, I don’t think there was a main issue unless if the other team misses two penalties and you still lose within five penalties, that of course doesn’t help,” Slot said.

“But I think in general, it was a game where we twice came one goal up and, in my opinion, we controlled the game until the moment they scored the 2-2.

“Then, all of a sudden, although we still had one big chance for Mo Salah, we could have lost it in the end as well?

But until that moment, [at] 2-1, there was every reason for me to expect that we would win this game.

“But after the 2-2 we were maybe lucky that we could go to penalties.

Alexis Mac Allister has taken responsibility after missing a penalty in the Community Shield shootout loss.

He posted on Instagram: “We are here to take responsibility, both in the good times and the bad.”

“Let’s keep working and getting ready for the start of a new Premier League campaign.

“Thank you to those who came to Wembley to support the team – see you at Anfield on Friday”.
